Meet Beetle
I would like to introduce to everyone to one of Mizzou’s oldest and most famous friends, who is making a new comeback here at MU. If you have been wondering why you keep seeing him in pictures, or lurking around on campus, well, it is because Beetle is back! Beetle Bailey was created by Mort Walker, MU alum of the class of 1948. Originally, Beetle was a student at a school suspiciously similar to Mizzou; however as the Korean War started Walker had Beetle enlist. The Beetle Bailey comic strip has been running since 1950 making it one of the oldest and longest running comics ever. If it seems strange to you that Mizzou now has a comic strip character running around, allow me to explain. Mort Walker is so excited about the new Student Center that he has allowed us to use Beetle as the Student Center’s mascot. Lately, he has been making “celebrity” appearances to show off the progress of what will soon be one of MU’s landmarks. So don’t be surprised if you see Beetle napping around campus; the center isn’t complete yet, but it seems he has made it his home.
